Waist High Pallet Garden & More at the 2013 SF Flower and Garden Show

Com,I have another exciting episode for you and I’m here on location, another field trip,2013, San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, welcome, and today I’m here at the Flowerand Garden Show to make a video for you guys to show you all the cool edibles growing onon the inside and how they’re teaching about growing edibles, the edible display gardens,and also the booths that have to specifically do with growing edibles and things that couldhelp you grow more food at home.

Now I’m here at the garden show today, and I alwaysencourage you guys to come to your local garden shows to check them out because you neverknow all the little cool things you’re going to find, I mean there’s definitely somerare plants that I’ve learned about in some of these garden shows, plus the seeds, andguess what, gardeners are just really cool people.

But if you can’t make it, or youdidn’t come, I’m here to report to you guys the coolest stuff having to do with ediblesat the 2013 Flower and Garden Show here in San Francisco.

Now we’re walking up to the edible gardenexhibit here at the 2013 San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, and in here it looks liketo me like the majority of it is non-edibles, and it says edible garden exhibit, I meanI guess you can eat the roses, roses are edible, but it just looks like while there are differentareas of plants, you know pollen or plants that attract pollinators and whatnot, thisis just a small little edible garden, which to me is nothing really spectacular, I meanthey have different plants growing and that’s really cool, but there’s no real techniquesor an area to show how people can do this at home.

So like two years ago the ediblegarden area was twice this size, and in my opinion a lot more impressive last year, wasn’tso good either and it looks like to me this keeps going down and down, so maybe this isnot an area that people are really requesting, gardeners that come to this event are moreinto the flowers and other non-edibles than the edibles, and I think that’s really sad.

Now what we’re looking at is the small spacegardens here at the Flower and Garden Show and I’m sad to say I mean, while all theselook pretty cool, there’s maybe like one or two edible plants contained within them.

To me this garden show’s more about the artistry or architecture of gardening andmaking things look really cool and cutesy pootsey.

To me gardening’s about growingfood and food that I can consume and edibles, so I’d really love to see a small spacegarden having to do with edibles, how to grow food, you know trees, shrubs, and even cropsin a small space.

Hopefully [inaudible] next year, but you know what? I’m just goingto bypass all this cutesy pootsy stuff.

Now we’re going to head into the Sproutopiaarea, and this is my favorite place of this whole garden show that shows the most aboutgrowing edibles, especially in small spaces, plus it’s a whole area dedicated to kidsand teaching kids how to grow, I mean if you guys have kids there are some incredible resourcesthat I’ll be sharing with you in a second so that you can teach your kids.

Even betterif you’re a teacher, they have different websites you could go to to get material toteach your kids about growing food.

So as you could see here, here’s a cool bed it’sactually called the Green Bed, and simply all it is, it’s a whole kit to make a raisedbed, this kit’s about two feet tall, and it’s made out of this stuff here that Ihaven’t seen before, it’s actually called fast wall, and these are wood chip cementpanels, so it’s made out of old pallets and also combined with cement, so they areporous and they also have some corner brackets to make the corners and screw it all in.

Youcan easily do this with something like [inaudible] backer material, something like that becausethat’s also a cement board, and they just have a wood topping on it.

And as you cansee they have a whole raised bed here planted out, whole bunch of vegetables including oneof my favorites, the Red Russian kale, especially good to grow in the winter and the summertime.

Next thing we’re going to talk about isthis here, they’ve got a strawberry garden made with straw wattles.

So a straw wattleis basically used for landscape control, also for containing spills and whatnot, but youcan easily just buy a straw wattle, many home improvement stores may have this, and fillit up with some soil and plant some strawberries, plant some herbs, even plant your lettuceor kale or collard greens.

And here’s some more ideas about growing food if you’vegot an old wheelbarrow, you can definitely put some compost in and grow some food.

Inaddition they got these fabric pots here growing some food so another easy, convenient solution,these are now coming in colors, that’s really cool.

Let’s see the next thing I want toshow you guys, I got free seeds, so you missed out if you weren’t able to get here, you’regoing to get some seeds today.

Okay we got some parsley and some cucumbers.

But whatI want to show you next is this strawberry tower.

So the strawberry tower is made outof the fabric pot once again, and it’s probably about two feet tall and it’s pre-cut withholes that you can instantly plant it out in strawberries, or I would also maybe plantlettuce or other herbs, I don’t know if I’d necessarily plant other things in here.

You know because it is a fabric pot, it is not super stable, so you might want to putin some rebar to hold it, or lean it against something so it stays stable.

The next thing, this is super-cool man I wantto show you guys this.

This is a pallet garden.

So you saw my past videos where I showed youthey had a pallet garden standing upright? Well this is a pallet garden standing longwaysit makes a nice little raised bed garden.

So all they did was they took a pallet, theylined it with some plastic so it’ll now hold some soil, they put some four by fourposts on the corners to make it a little table, and then they planted in it.

Now they leftthe cross pieces of wood on, but I’d probably take a whole bunch out and maybe move someof these to the edges to make it more of a little raised bed and yeah, while it’s onlythree and a half inches deep, that’s plenty enough room to grow some shallow rooted plants,such as lettuce and herbs and, I don’t know I might even try some of greens that theyhave in here today.

So the last thing I want to show you guysover here is a very simple raised bed design, I mean basically they got some two by twelvewood here, and this is just a standard construction grade and yeah, that’ll work, coat it witha good non-toxic stain, it’ll last a couple years if you want to get better you mightuse some cedar or some redwood which will even last longer.

And instead of even screwingthe wood together they just got these nice corner brackets that have designs in it, sothese have butterflies, this is actually called the Embrace, and I had that on a previousshow.

And it’s just very simple to put one of these together, get some pieces of wood,your local Home Depot or Lowes will even cut the wood for you, come home, either screwit together, get some of these nice pretty braces, fill it with some soil, and startgrowing today, I mean it really is that easy, it doesn’t take rocket science to starta garden and I encourage everyone watching this to either start or even grow more foodat home so you can be eating out of your garden instead of the supermarket.

Now we’re in the Kids Growing Strong area,and this is the whole area dedicated to kids, and even big kids like myself that want togrow strawberries is actually what they’re doing today, is actually they’re going togrow little strawberries out for you, these are little strawberry roots that actuallythey’ll plant in a cow pot with the compost and you can take it home and grow your ownstrawberries so I this is excellent little activity for kids or even adults to know wherestrawberries come from from just a little plant that might not even look alive.

Butmore important than just the strawberries, they have something really cool going on onthe other side, so let me show that to you guys next.

What they’re doing over here is they’reteaching kids about the mighty greens and how powerful greens are, I mean after all,the name of my show is called Growing Your Greens because I want you guys to grow yourgreens not only if you’re kids, but if you’re adults too, and eat them because greens arethe most nutrient-dense foods on the entire planet, and it’s my goal every day to eattwo pounds.

And by growing your garden you can easily do that for free, because greensgrow.

So what they’re doing here which I think is really great is they’re makingit fun for kids to grow some greens.

What they have here is the mighty greens, and they’reeven using the Ninja Turtle dude there, and they’ve got a Chinese takeout containerand they’re filling it with some compost, giving them a nice little tag, and sproutingthis with Asian greens, and Asian greens are good to grow because Asian greens generallygrow pretty fast and you’ll see fairly quick results and be able to snack out of your ownlittle greens.

So I think teaching kids about greens and us adults too, is very importantand I’m glad they’re doing it.

So if you have kids, you can learn more about some ofthe programs and some of the education and online resources they have at kidsgrowingstrong.


One of the coolest things at these gardenshows is I get to find new exciting technologies and products and things that can help youguys grow at home, and one of those is right here it’s the Farm Fuel Inc Company, andhow they started was they started by finding something they could grow to grow fuel.

Sowhat they found was they grew this stuff right here, you guys might have maybe even eatenthis last night for dinner if you had some mustard.

This is actually just mustard seed,and this is a specific gold mustard seed and besides this kind they have a Ida gold mustardseed, and here’s the standard central coast wild mustard seed.

So what they’re doinghere is growing the mustard because they once again looked at it for growing as an oil sothey could burn this in converted diesel trucks and diesel tractors and whatnot.

But asidefrom that, they found out there’s some really good properties to it like biofument propertiesand weed suppression qualities that can also counteract fungus and nematodes, and thisis an excellent cover crop.

Once they grow the mustard to seed and get the seeds andthey extract the oil, they have the press cake left, and that’s this right here, thisis how it comes out, and what they do is they put in the flakes and then they powder itup here, or they pelletize it.

And they actually sell this as a fertilizer, a mustard mealfertilizer.

So it’s 4.

6, 3.

39 and a 1.

2 fertilizer, so this will enrich your garden,but in addition it has some good properties, it has the same properties that I talked aboutso it will help suppress weeds, it’ll knock out the bad nematodes, but it’ll also knockout all the beneficials in there, it’ll be a reduction.

But then after the reduction,there’ll be a resurgence, and then the good beneficial bacterias will thrive and the negativeones will still be in a reduced population site, and this is an OMRI, organic-certifiedproduct.

And finally they’re selling some mustard seed so you can grow these at yourown place.

One is right here, this is the Ida Gold, and this is the one that specificallyhas properties to suppress the weeds, and then they have the Pacific Gold mustard, andthis reduces soil-borne pathogens.

So if you have bad soil then hey, grow some mustard,but be aware, unless you want mustard to become a weed in your yard or [inaudible] until fullterm with the seed, you want to harvest it right when it’s flowering and cut it downso that these won’t drop seeds and become a weed in your hard.

The last thing that Iwant to share about mustard, and it’s a very beneficial crop, it has a nice tap rootthat goes down really deep to hold the nitrogen up so when it pulls it up you compost theplant after you’re done with it, and then now you can enrich your garden with thoseproperties.

Now we’re at the booth of Monrovia, andactually they’re a big wholesale nursery, you know some nurseries around you may sellthe starts, or the plants from Monrovia.

While they do have a lot of non-edibles, they alsohave some edibles, and I’m going to share with you guys some introductions they have,actually some new and old ones.

So my favorite blueberry they have here is this guy righthere, this is actually called the Bountiful Blueberry.

Now I like this because each ofthese flowers are going to turn into a blueberry, and you know if you just get some common varietyof blueberry, you may not produce as much fruit for you, so this is going to be verybountiful, as in the name.

The other thing I like about this plant is that in the climatehere it’s going to be an evergreen, it’s going to keep its leaves all year long, evenin the winter.

In the winter time the leaves are going to turn a purplish color, and thenthey’re going to start greening up when the weather warms up, so I like the evergreensthat don’t drop the leaves.

So I’m actually going to pick some of these up today and growthese in a container, these are perfect for container growing.

The last thing I want to share with you guystoday is a new introduction, and actually this is called the raspberry shortcake.

Sothis is a raspberry plant, but it’s unlike any other raspberry plant that I’ve seenbefore.

As you guys know most raspberries grow up canes and long stalks, this is actuallya raspberry bush, so it grows like a little bush, and it will produce bountiful amountsof fruit in addition, it’s a thornless variety and I’m really sad they don’t have anymore today, because I would have definitely got one to try to grow it at home and seewhat happens.

Now we’re going to check out another booth,this is probably my favorite seed booth of this whole event here, and it’s actuallycalled the Heirloom Seed Store at theheirloomseedstore.

Com, and what they offer is franchi seeds, andwhat these are are seeds from Italy, so these are seeds maybe not normally available ata place near you, so they’re really unique seeds, and I guess I’ll dive right in andshare the most unique thing here, it’s really trippy.

The coolest thing that I haven’tever seen before is right here, this is a rack for growing specific plants, or mostlygrasses for specific animals, so if you like the bunnies or you have pet bunnies, checkout you guys want to get this seed mixture here.

This is a seed mixture that you growfor your bunnies.

So you plant the seeds, the bunnies love the greens that this willproduce.

And the same thing, if you’ve got a canary, you can grow these greens for yourcanary.

Those are the ones they’ll like.

Of course if you’ve got a cat, you growsome cat grass and they got ones for hamsters, they got ones for squirrels, hey feed thesquirrels the greens it loves so it doesn’t eat out of your garden.

In addition of thecoolest, softest pets, and my friend used to have one of these, chinchilla.

I love chinchillas,they’re so soft.

Don’t forget to give them their chinchilla dust, but you can alsogrow some greens for your chinchilla.

Because greens are very important and you guys shouldbe eating your greens too, so next we’re going to share with you some of the greensfrom Franchi that they’re offering here.

While they have a whole bunch of differentgreens, we’re going to focus on some of the unique varieties, I mean they have lettucesand things, but they have different varieties that maybe you can’t find here.

But someof the things I want to talk about today are just some cool greens that you may be hardto find.

I personally grow this one actually it’s coming back as a weed and was goingto be in an upcoming episode where I talk more about this.

This is actually called thebuckhorn plantain, and and they use this as a nice leafy green.

Another one is a uniquegreen that’s very hard to find is this guy right here, this is actually called the [inaudible],and it’s yet another leafy green that I actually never tried, so I hope to grow thisand then try it so I can see what it tastes like, because I think the more greens youcan get into your diet, the better.

Now besides all the greens they also havesome unique crops you can grow including one down here, you guys might like this one, forthose of you guys that drink coffee, why don’t you guys grow your own coffee plant? Wellthis is definitely one of those plants that grows in the tropics, so if you grow it youneed to definitely grow it inside, it likes some heat, and also definitely nice full sun.

So they actually call this one Le Bizarrie, so like a bizarre plant.

Check this out right here, one of my favoritegreens that I’m going to start to grow, I just had some of this stuff probably abouta couple of months ago, it’s called puntarelle.

And the puntarelle is a kind of chicory, andwhile you can eat the leaves, the thing that’s going to form in the middle of it it somekind of flowering stalk thing that man it tasted so good when I had it, it’s likenice and mild and crunchy.

So if you like something like lettuce stems, or broccolistems like I love to eat, you’re going to love the puntarelle.

So another thing I wantyou guys to focus on is grow a variety of different colors.

Many people know about thestandard green beans that they have here, and many people grow green beans, but checkit out, you can also grow purple beans, and check it out even yellow beans.

So imaginegrowing purple, green and yellow beans all next to each other.

You’re definitely goingto trip some people out, it’s going to look really cool, plus you’ll be able to eatdifferent kinds of antioxidants, because every different pigment in a food is different antioxidantswhich in my opinion are really beneficial for us.

Besides just the greens they havea whole selection of different style zucchini, so they got these little round zucchinis here,instead of just your standard long zucchinis, and even better yet they got these guys righthere which are actually these guys grow really long, and they’ll actually curve, theseare called [inaudible].

And that’s actually city in Italy.

So seeds from Italy, differentcities in Italy can now grow in your garden, I mean if you’re Italian you want to growsome of your heritage foods or even if you don’t and you want to grow some unique foodsthat have different tastes and flavor sensations than the standard ones cultivated here.

Plus,they might also grow better in your area.

The last thing I want to share with you guystoday besides all the different peppers and tomato varieties they have is right down overhere, it’s one of my favorite foods, it’s the radish.

But did you know that besidesjust the standard red radish you got white ones, purple ones, and yellow ones? So I likethis packet here, because now you’re going to be able to grow a mixture and a rainbowof radish colors in your garden, maybe one color might grow better than the other, orit’s a great way to once again get more colors in your diet instead of the standardred one.

I always encourage you guys to grow new and different varieties of plants andthat’s what they’re offering here, that you can get at the heirloomseedstore.


Now we’re going to check out yet anotherbooth here, and check it out, Jora Compost Tumblers, this is a better compost tumblerthan I’m using, I’ve been getting good results with, but we’re going to ask thecompost experts here the question, what’s the one tip for composting that they couldgive to you to improve your pile and to compost all your kitchen and yard waste.

So we’regoing to go over here and talk to Arica about this.

Arica what’s the number one tip youwant to share with my viewers for composting? You know I guess for composting the numberone tip would be depending on how involved in composting you want to be, there’s alldifferent types of methods for composting.

If you’re really wanting to get hands-on,and you’re able to maintain a compost pile, I think that’d be great.

You can compostlarge amounts of your waste with a pile and things break down great, and then if you wantsomething really easy to use that’s going to be rodent-proof and something that youcan put your kitchen waste into, give it a little bit of movement and have a little lessmaintenance, I think a tumbler would be an awesome alternative.

So I’m personally the kind of guy that Idon’t want to mess with the compost, I mean yeah I’ve piled up compost before and composthappens, and sometimes it’s taken a year, because my pile wasn’t have the right mixture,and didn’t really work well.

So that’s why I like the Jora Composter, because I justthrow the stuff in there, and even if I’m doing it wrong, it still works so that’sreally cool.

So next what I want to share with you is actually one special tip thatI learned from the company here to make my compost happen really well, and that’s theseguys.

They recommended I use the wood pellets for my carbon source, because a carbon sourcecan be difficult to find.

Many people can use paper, newspaper, and of course leavesand sawdust, but that may be challenging to get for some people, so the compressed woodpellets make it really simple to compost effectively, and that’s what I’ve learned, that itworks just really well.

And that’s what I recommend to you guys too, so you want togo to a feed store and buy the [inaudible] use for bedding for the horses.

And I thinkI buy like a 40 pound bag for seven bucks, makes it a lot easier than collecting leavesand doing all this kind of stuff, plus it works really efficiently I found.

And thelast thing I want to share with you guys here, this is the finished compost, and how yourcompost should look, I mean it almost looks like the coffee grounds that you put in yourcoffee to make coffee, and a little bit wet, but not too moist.

Has a nice neutral earthysmell, doesn’t smell like rotten anything, and this would be great to put right in yourgarden to feed your soil, because your soil is the most important thing.

I’m so happy that this year at the Flowerand Garden Show they actually have [inaudible] Loving Foods.

And this is organic and plant-basedfoods that you can eat.

A lot of the gardeners I see here on the other side of the buildinghave a whole bunch of highly processed in my opinion junk foods, and I want you guysout there to eat a plant-strong diet, eat more plants and less of the other stuff.

Becauseby eating more plants, you’re going to definitely be healthier, so I’m glad they’re offeringpeople options here, and I hope at other garden show they also offer plant-based options sopeople can eat healthier.

Because to me that’s what gardening is all about is growing food,eating healthy food so that you can be as healthy as you can, and help the health ofthe planet at the same time.

Now we’re in the display garden area, andthis is where they have big fancy displays of gardening, it’s more like for non-edibles,and it really kind of sucks, I mean some of them look really cool and I love the designaspects and design elements, I mean here’s one over here that’s kind of really cooland yeah I think I see some kumquats up there, but pretty much for the most part there’snothing showing edibles being used in landscaping which is my goal.

Usually every year there’san edible display usually, but that organization is not here this time, so I’m kind of sad.

So in the display garden area there’s not a whole lot of edibles growing on, but onereally cool thing is this concept right here.

So you can see here, you could literally havea wall and grow things, and no, you don’t want to be growing grass, you could use thissame technique, but grow edibles like some herbs, some lettuce to grow out, so what theyhave here is some framing two by sixes, and then they [inaudible] some more two by sixeswith spacing between, and if I was to do this I’d probably leave a little bit larger gaps,and now you could literally grow a vertical wall of vegetables hanging out the sides,definitely really cool.

One of my favorite display gardens believe it or not is thisright here, and there’s not even a whole lot growing on, but what it is, it’s educatingpeople about the weeds, and it’s more of the artistic garden, and you can see they’reusing pallets here as a deck.

They got some grass, although it could be edibles, it couldbe some weeds, because that’s what they’re talking about here, they’re talking aboutweeds and the benefits of weeds and to honor the weeds, so they’re allowing people tocome up and make a little sign talking about weeds and then post it up, so let’s takea look at a couple of them.

Here’s another way to think of weeds, “Weedshelp clean the air” definitely [inaudible] air pollution, we need all the help we canget, so bring it on weeds.

Here’s another one “And the weeds will inherit the world,”well hey, if they’re going to inherit things, start eating them first, and then we’lltake over the weeds.

This one says it all “Weeds are wonderful only if you can eatthem.

” Mmmm, weeds are so good.

Here’s a funny one, “My lower back does not likeweeds.

” Does your lower back like the weeds? I like to eat the weeds, I don’t mind bendingover, it gives me more exercise.

Here’s another cool one, “You can always counton weeds, they’ll always be there for you.

” And they’ll always be there for you to eat.

Just be sure you know the edible ones.

Here’s the last one I’m going to share with you,it says “Weeds are greens too, eat the edible ones, they’re cheaper than organic” andguess who said that, growingyourgreens.


Now we’re at the display garden of Dan Posey,landscape architect who designed this whole thing, and Dan does a lot of work with restoration,his website to learn more about him is landscaperestoration.


He tries to incorporate edibles and even permacultureinto the design to get edibles back into the landscape, whether you want to have all ediblesor part edibles, he’s done award-winning designs, and he’s available in the Bay areaactually, but why we’re here is because besides just doing the design, he gets somebodyset up on using natural methods, and that’s why he has actually the the Boogie Brew peoplehere talking about their products and how to basically rebuild the soil because theanswer is in the soil, it’s having good soil so your plants can grow, and not onlygrow but thrive.

So what we’re going to do today is we’re going to actually talkto the founder of the Boogie Brew and ask him one simple question.

So now we’re with Josh, the creator of theBoogie Brew compost tea that I like so much, but we’re going to ask him a different questiontoday.

So Josh, if somebody can’t brew their own compost tea, because you got me believingin this stuff, I mean how can somebody best enrich their garden for my viewers out there? Without using my one-stop shop super compost[inaudible] Okay none of that stuff man, just tell mehow they can… No propaganda here about compost tea folks,best way you can do that is make your own freaking compost folks.

And you want to findthe right carbon and nitrogen ratio, and you want to get in there and make a pile and startturning it folks.

Maybe you don’t even have the ability to buy a compost drum.

Obviouslyif you can afford it, get yourself the great tumblers that are out there, we’ve all heardabout the one from Sweden, there’s also a few other good ones, you have some already.

But just start putting in your food scraps, don’t put them into the bin, create thatcarbon life force, you need that topsoil more than we need to be able to grow our own foodwe need to be able to create the topsoil to grow it in the first place.

Suburbia is dying.

Guess what? It takes ten kilocalories of fossil fuel energy to make one calorie of food energybefore you cook it.

And the typical American dinner table once again, like you heard it,ten kilocalories of fossil fuel energy to create one calorie of food energy.

Think aboutthat folks, something has to change.

Our great-grandparents, they would go out there and dig, it’s timeto start digging.

Use the hands that God gave you, you know they’re actually designedto sit there and make love to the soil you know, paw the soil right John, right? That’s it, man.

I mean look at you man, you are the man, Johnman, god bless you for doing what you do, keep educating yourselves folks, get thatoptimum blend going.

Try not to use any meat scraps unless you have the luxury of one ofthese super composters, get in there, put your food scraps in there, find some localwood chips, maybe you can find a landscaper down the road who’s just chopped down atree.

If you see that by the side of the road and it looks like a place that hasn’t beensprayed with herbicide, stop and ask him “Hey amigo, before you go carbon…” you know,one more carbon footprint of taking valuable fungal component to soil with them away toa land dump in a truck, hold on a minute folks, that could go into your neighborhood compostpile.

Another thing you can do is join a community farm.

Folks they’re sprouting up all overAmerica.

Now I keep hearing these stories of places where people are actually beingdenied the right to have their own farming, so like I said thank you America, thanks forbelieving in Boogie, and keep on growing like John says.

Alright Josh, thanks a lot man.

I would definitelyagree with Josh, I think that if you can’t brew your compost tea, at least make compost,whether you’re using your food scraps, a good carbon source like composting the woodchips on their own, a fungal dominated pile, [inaudible] bacterial pile, and add them together,I mean everybody’s got some food scraps they can start to compost to start buildingtheir garden today instead of tomorrow.

And the last thing that I’m going to leaveyou guys with in the display garden, this little display here, I like it because actuallyyou can incorporate aquaculture into the design with a little tranquil water stream runningdown with a little cool flume like log that the water trickles down into.

Definitely thinkthis is cool and what they’re using is they’re just using standard nursery [inaudible] withthe roots hanging down below into the water, fed with the fish wastes.
